PEER Review

The Double Reed Journal, vol. 46, no. 4 (January 2024)

Published by the International Double Reed Society

Reviewer: Erin Hannigan, Principal Oboe of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

“Listening to music is something most members of the IDRS do on a regular basis. We listen most often for work, sometimes for study, occasionally as background music, but not many double-reed albums fit a category of fun, light, contemplative, and atmospheric holiday listening. Double Keyed oboist Kirstin Myers (oboe and English horn), and Frances Drost (piano), created this beautiful album as a musical gift to their family, friends, and the oboe community, and it fulfills this niche perfectly.

The album contains ten tracks of well-known Christmas carols, presented in new and refreshing arrangements by Phillip Keveren. These arrangements are atmospheric and engaging, and encapsulate not only the joy of the season, but also inspire deep contemplation and reflection. Musical style is varied throughout the album, from a jazzy arrangement of I Saw Three Ships, to a contemplative rendition of Gesu Bambino, to a theme and variations on Sing We Now of Christmas. Other popular tunes represented are: What Child is This, In the Bleak Midwinter, O Holy Night, Coventry Carol, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, I Wonder as I Wander, and Carol of the Bells. The performers on this album sound like they not only play together often, but they love doing so. This recording is one that will be enjoyed by music lovers and double-reed enthusiasts alike.

This album was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Both Myers and Drost actively perform in central Pennsylvania. Midwinter's Gift is the winner of the 2022-23 Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame's Best Classical/Crossover Album.”

an unexpected message…

In December of 2022, Kirstin sent a copy of Midwinter’s Gift to her former oboe professor, IUP Faculty Emeritus Robert Lloyd.

A few weeks later she received this unexpected and overwhelming note in the mail. It reads…

“Congratulations Kirstin,

Wow!! What an incredible rendition of Christmas carols you, Frances, and your arranger have made for oboists. I am not aware of any other arrangements of Christmas carols for oboe and piano that even come close to these spectacular creations. A pleasant aspect that I love about these carols is that they are rendered in a modern/contemporary genre.

An additional comment about these pieces exists in a more existential realm. It is gleaned but not limited to the 'lament' introduction to the "Carol Of The Bells." The beautiful introduction in the 'lament' certainly speaks to the sadness of the ongoing events in Ukraine while the carol itself emphasizes the strength and hope of the Ukrainian people.

An attentive listener, I believe, would recognize that at work here is a transcendental ingredient embedded within the carols. Metaphysically it is a path to a 5th spiritual dimension.

The 'lament', along with numerous other parts of these carol interpretations, prove its existence. These occasions are, at least for me, encounters with the voice and spirit of God.

Kirstin...what a beautiful oboe sound you have and your technique is quite impressive.

Your newly created Christmas CD is now one of my prized possessions.

Sincerely,

Robert Lloyd”
